Floating is part therapy, part meditation, part transcendence, and one of the most relaxing experiences you can offer your brain, body, mind and nervous system.
Classically known as “sensory deprivation”, floatation therapy is suitable for professionals, athletes, meditators, and everyone in between. Creating complete relief from sensory stresses and gravitational pressures, you are able to effortlessly drop into a deep state of meditative relaxation. Floating has a myriad of benefits that have been scientifically documented over the course of 50 years of study.
Floating is not a treatment for any specific mental or physical condition, and is most effective when combined with counseling and other therapies, but many people find the deep level of nervous system reset and reorganization that occurs during a float to be deeply beneficial in managing the symptoms and expressions of a wide range of conditions, including:
The following video from our friends at Float House in British Columbia provides a nice overview of the benefits and experience of floating.
During a float, your body is suspended in 10 inches of water that is heated to the same temperature as your skin and contains 800 lbs of Epsom salts. The Epsom salts, by themselves, have a wide range of incredible health benefits, but aside from that the experience is a weightlessness that is often described as like being in space or achieving neutral buoyancy while scuba diving. Your body fully relaxes – and you really don’t realize how un-relaxed your body normally is until it fully unwinds in a float tank – and your mind is free to relax in nothingness, reflect on solutions to your concerns, or simply wander into other realms and states. The ultimate goal is for your brain to achieve a Theta-Delta brainwave state, which brings forward heightened receptivity, flashes of dreamlike imagery and inspiration.
The results are as unique as each person floating; some experience a simple deep relaxation of their body, some experience profound meditative insights, some see existing pain disappear altogether. This is largely due to what is going on neurologically when the brain is put into Theta-Delta and the central nervous system is put into a “parasympathetic state”; this one-two punch of effects dramatically affects neurotransmitter production. In particular, floating increases production of:
Simultaneously, floating decreases production of stress markers:
While everyone will experience these brain benefits on some level, the experiential reality for most people – in the beginning, at least – is somewhere in the middle of the range of possible experiences. Nobody should expect an “Altered States” experience or immediate cessation of that back pain that’s been plaguing them for 20 years. But what we promise everyone is a unique and thoroughly pleasant experience that is unlike any you’ve tried before, with the potential for deeply profound experiences that come with float practice.
About Our Float Rooms
Each of our float rooms have their own unique style, but both offer the same basic experience, designed to block out all light, sound, tactile senses and outside distractions. They are designed to block out the otherwise endless stream of sensory information that represents a certain kind of stress on your central nervous system – hence the original moniker of “sensory deprivation” – to allow it to fully take a break from processing new information and to totally relax; to focus the body and mind inward; and then ultimately allow it to expand outwards.
Each room has its own unique style. Both are equipped with a private shower for before and after your float, and all the supplies you’ll need are supplied for free, including towels, ear plugs and q-tips.
Our Forest Room is inspired by many hikes throughout the Olympic National Forest. Imagine wandering through the dense Pacific Northwest woods, past lush plant life and over mossy nurse logs, only to discover a warm, shimmering, entirely private pool you can lay down in and let all your troubles drift away. That’s the vibe we’re going for. With a huge rock-tiled shower, hanging plants, and cedar and maple accents harvested right here in Olympia, the Forest Room will have you returning home, to our regional Mother Earth and to your self.
The Forest Room float tank is 8′ by 5′ and includes a built-in chromatherapy lighting system and audio transducers designed to allow sound to travel seamlessly through both the water and your body.
The Galaxy Room is themed after a journey into space. Whether that is outer space or inner space is entirely up to the astronaut, or psychonaut. With soothing chromatherapy lighting, slowly pulsating waves of light on the ceiling, and additional ambient lighting in the shower, the vibe of the room will having you stepping beyond your usual world in a split second. The room’s incredible steam shower with luxurious body jets and a rain shower are a popular favorite.
Inside the 8′ by 5′ float tank, you’ll experience a constellation of stars on the ceiling above you; a chromatherapy lighting system; and a four-speaker sound system to let you fully immerse and float off into liquid music.
Our float rooms were specifically designed with an awareness that many people have anxieties about claustrophobia and that giving up control in a new and isolated environment can trigger big emotions for some, particularly those living with anxiety disorders or OCD. The float tanks’ intentional features usually make these anxieties disappear when you see the rooms and our full pre-float orientation leaves you feeling in control.
The body of scientific evidence supporting the health and wellness benefits of floatation therapy is growing all the time. One leading study by Karlsbad University in Sweden found that: “Floating was perceived as pleasant. An altered state of consciousness was induced, varying from a milder state including profound relaxation and altered time perception, to more powerful with perceptual changes and profound sensations such as out-of-body experiences and perinatal experiences.”
Starting with Dr. John C. Lilly’s original research in the 1950s, there have been dozens and dozens of clinical studies demonstrating the effects of floatation therapy. Most recently, neuropsychologists such as those at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research have found floatation far more effective for treatment of anxiety disorders tha all the so-called “gold standard” approach of benzodiazepines, while clinical psychologists have found the “effects of floating to enhance creativity, physical performance, stress management, psycho and physiological effects, relief from chronic pain- fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.”
The Float Research Collective is an excellent resource for clinical studies, presentations and all things science as it relates to floating.
Floating together can be an incredible way of either reconnecting or having some handholding – literally and emotionally – if you’re feeling anxious about your first float experience. Many couples float together as a regular date night activity, and some even find that they can relax even deeper into the float as they co-regulate with their partner or friend.
A float session combines incredibly well with our other services, either as a way of relaxing your body, mind and nervous system prior to another therapy, or using the quiet space for some reflection and processing afterwards.
Float + Massage: This is the ultimate combination of relaxation therapies. The benefits of each compound amazingly. Generally, we recommend floating first and then getting a massage. Your muscles and tendons will already be nice and loose, making the massage more enjoyable and the results more effective.
Float + Sauna: While floating is deeply relaxing, sauna can be energizing, so they make an excellent pairing to create a day of relaxed energy. We typically recommend floating after a sauna, so your body isn’t too hot when it gets into the skin-temperature float tank. If you have a low core temperature, though, a sauna before your float can be a great way of making the float more comfortable for your particular body.
Counseling or Energy Work + Float: If you’ve been to a counseling session with us (Intuitive Counseling, Somatic Coaching, Hypnotherapy) or received Energy Work, a float afterwards can be an outstanding way of integrating all the mental, emotional and energetic processing and changes that took place. In the peaceful solitude of the float tank, undistracted by outside stimuli, you can really focus in on finding those hidden gems of healing that the prior session may have brought to the surface.
Float + Skin Care: Floating for 90 minutes in magnesium-rich Epsom salts is already incredibly healing for your skin, leaving it feeling soft and renewed. Why not double down and combine it with a relaxing and regenerative facial? ? The deepest level of pampering, either for yourself or as a gift. You leave feeling great about your insides and your outside.
If you want help figuring out which combination might be best for you, or with getting them booked, feel free to contact us and we’d be happy to help get you going.
